Laser Welding is a non-contact process which requires access to the weld zone from only one side of the parts. The weld is formed as the laser light rapidly heats the material – typically calculated in millliseconds. Laser Marking utilizes laser light to mark (ablate, melt, vaporize or remove) materials using a fine spot diameter ranging from 0.002” to 0.01”. The laser marks with short pulses (30 nanoseconds), providing precise control and negligible heat input. Mark penetration into the material is less than 0.001” unless otherwise required. Marking styles include text, 2D, serial numbers, and bar codes. Many metals and plastics may be laser welded and marked. Typical applications for both processes include implantable medical devices, automotive electronics, sensors and controls, computer and disk drive components, batteries, and more.
